Who we are
This three day art summer school is devised and led by May Everett, a fully qualified teacher and professional artist with full Enhanced DBS clearance. May studied Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton and completed a Masters Level 7 Art & Design PGCE in 2015. Subsequently, May has taught across GCSE, A Level, Level 3 Diploma, and Foundation Diploma Art courses. She became a successful Course Lead in Art & Design Further Education and she now works as a freelance art tutor and self employed artist.

During her time as Course Lead at Greater Brighton Metropolitan college, May successfully planned and delivered the UAL accredited Level 3 Art & Design Diploma supporting and helping young people to achieve high grades, as evidenced by the rise of Merits & Distinctions from 22% in 2016, to 44% in 2020. Most importantly however, her focus was to help students build confidence and develop key critical, theoretical, and practical art skills in preparation for higher education and creative industry placements.

The workshops will be supported by Dan Finlay, who has a Masters in Music and Media and now works as a freelance tutor and Learning Support Assistant with full Enhanced DBS clearance.

Who is this course for
This course is ideal for those aged 16-19 looking to explore their creativity in a professional studio setting. Participants do not need to be currently studying art/textiles/photography to attend, they just need a willingness to experiment and an enthusiasm for art and design. Through this course we aim to create a relaxed, inclusive, environment where art and ideas can flourish, giving young people the opportunity to enrich their current studies or simply immerse themselves in mindful art making for three days.

What to expect

The 3 days will be structured around a series of mini projects that will help build creative skills and self-confidence. We take a multidisciplinary approach and will explore mark making, expressive painting, collage, 3D materials, photography/projection, mixed media, and printmaking, amongst other things. Students will be encouraged to investigate different working methods and take inspiration from the environment around them. As well as making work in the spacious main studio, we will also have access to a large garden, which will be utilised for creative tasks - weather permitting! Students will produce their own work (to be taken home at the end of day 3) as well as work together on collaborative outcomes. We will ensure that collaborative outcomes are photographed, and will also encourage individuals to document their process. Following the course, photographs will be uploaded to a Google Drive folder and participants will be sent a link enabling them to access and download images, should they wish to.

What to bring

All materials will be provided plus some light refreshments (water, fruit, tea/coffee, biscuits). We advise that all attendees wear comfortable clothes that they don’t mind getting messy, or bring an apron or old shirt. Lunch is not provided so students will need to bring a packed lunch to have in the studio or garden. Under 18s will require permission from parents/guardians to take their lunch break outside of the building. There is no smoking or vaping permitted anywhere on site.

How to book and cancellation policy
Places are limited and booking is essential. Once your booking is complete, you will receive an email within a few days requesting further information (e.g. attendee details, accessibility requiremnts etc.). Whilst we encourage attendance for all three days, it may be possible for students to only attend 1 or 2 of the days for a reduced fee. Please get in touch via my Contact page prior to booking to enquire about alternative options.

Cancellation and a refund can be obtained up to two weeks prior to the start date. If less than two weeks notice is given, then you have the option for either a 50% refund or can transfer the booking to next year. In the unlikely event that the course is unable to run, you will receive a full refund.
